Microphlebectomy at VeinGuard Heart & Vascular Center

Varicose veins affect the appearance of the skin with bluish, enlarged and twisted veins on the legs. Apart from being a cosmetic problem, varicose veins can also cause considerable discomfort with pain and throbbing. It can limit daily activities while causing leg cramps at night that hampers sleep. When left untreated, large varicose veins can at times lead to more serious complications.

Microphlebectomy performed by our experienced vascular doctor at VeinGuard Heart & Vascular Center is the right treatment option for varicose veins.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

The deep veins in the legs carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. These veins have valves that help prevent blood from flowing back to the legs. However, in some people, these valves weaken, leading to pooling of blood in the legs that give rise to the bluish, swollen appearance.

Older age, genetic predisposition, being overweight, standing in the same position for long periods of time and other vascular diseases are some known risk factors for varicose veins.

What is Microphlebectomy?

Microphlebectomy, also known as Ambulatory Phlebectomy (AP), is a minimally invasive surgical technique to treat varicose veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy, when performed in the right clinical settings, is known to provide immediate results and leads to higher patient satisfaction.

At VeinGuard Heart & Vascular Center, we offer a range of state-of-the-art diagnostic and interventional cardiology services. Our highly skilled vascular specialists perform in-office microphlebectomy to achieve optimal results.

Before & After Treatment

Microphlebectomy Procedure: What to Expect?

Prior to the procedure, our vascular specialist will thoroughly review your overall health, medical history, allergies, medications and use of supplements. An ultrasound scan is performed to confirm that the deep venous system is intact and that the arterial system is functional.

If the doctor finds any problems with these, they will have to address the problem, before going ahead with the microphlebectomy. The procedure is typically completed within an hour.

What Happens During the Ambulatory Phlebectomy Procedure?

  1. The doctor will first clean and sterilize the area to be treated.
  2. A local anesthetic is then injected in the area.
  3. The doctor then makes a series of tiny incisions around the vein.
  4. A special instrument that has a hook attached is then inserted into the incision to remove the troublesome varicose veins.
  5. After the procedure, the area treated is washed using a sterile solution, and small bandages are applied. Over this wound dressing, the doctor also applies an elastic compression dressing to cover the tiny incisions. Compression stockings can also be worn.
  6. Dressings are removed within a day or two but compression dressing is usually worn for one to three weeks.

Is the Procedure Safe?

Ambulatory phlebectomy is a safe and well-tolerated procedure with no side effects. There is no adverse effect on circulatory efficiency or on the functioning of other veins that carry blood back to the heart.

At VeinGuard Heart & Vascular Center, we place top priority on your safety as well as on achieving the best results. This is the reason why we have emerged as one of the preferred facilities for vein treatment in Fairfax, VA.
