What Causes Varicose Veins?

Microphlebectomy Procedure: What to Expect?

Prior to the procedure, our vascular specialist will thoroughly review your overall health, medical history, allergies, medications and use of supplements. An ultrasound scan is performed to confirm that the deep venous system is intact and that the arterial system is functional.

If the doctor finds any problems with these, they will have to address the problem, before going ahead with the microphlebectomy. The procedure is typically completed within an hour.

What Happens During the Ambulatory Phlebectomy Procedure?

  1. The doctor will first clean and sterilize the area to be treated.
  2. A local anesthetic is then injected in the area.
  3. The doctor then makes a series of tiny incisions around the vein.
  4. A special instrument that has a hook attached is then inserted into the incision to remove the troublesome varicose veins.
  5. After the procedure, the area treated is washed using a sterile solution, and small bandages are applied. Over this wound dressing, the doctor also applies an elastic compression dressing to cover the tiny incisions. Compression stockings can also be worn.
  6. Dressings are removed within a day or two but compression dressing is usually worn for one to three weeks.
